There was a Halloween years ago that I will always remember. I had found this shaggy dog costume cheap that my daughter just loved. She thought it was wonderful!
Until she put it on. Oh the tears!! The crying did not stop. She was 3, maybe 4. Of course I could not make her wear it! At that time I had a little collection of dress-up outfits, consisting of a handful of garage sale Halloween costumes I had collected. So we changed her outfit . . on Halloween. And it was that particular Halloween when it became evident that this child does not like costumes.
She doesn’t care for anything on her head. She doesn’t want anything really bulky. She doesn’t want face paint. She doesn’t like the way any of it feels.
This Halloween she had chosen a beautiful silver fox mask with ears. I doubted this choice in the store. We’ve done this before. She likes the way things look; but not the way they feel.
This Halloween ended with a sad girl . . like several other Halloweens before it. We took the mask off and she consoled herself with candy until we got to the truck. She has already decided that next Halloween she’d like to sit at home with warm, buttery popcorn watching Halloween shows. 🙂
Tonight I am thankful that my non-costume loving girl is thinking this way! This has never been her holiday! She did enjoy her candy stash tonight. And she enjoyed probably the first five trick or treating stops. But I think she made a great decision for herself with regards to next year! Now, we’ll just see how she feels next year!
Happy Halloween everyone!
