I recently had the privilege of working with a couple who were not born in this country. They were both from different countries themselves. The man has lived in this country for several decades now. The woman has been here much shorter of a time. To listen to them talk about this country is inspiring.
During our interaction, I was representing them in a house purchase transaction. This was a rough transaction. The woman got scared at one point that they would lose all their money and not own the house. The man (and myself) assured her that could not happen here. Her fear was real. Where she came from, there were no enforceable laws to keep the citizens safe in a situation like this. Both of these people’s appreciation for our country was almost tangible when they spoke. It was wonderful!
Let me switch gears for a moment and talk about symbols. I wear a wedding ring on my left hand as a symbol of my love and commitment to my husband. I have run in to people who do not respect this symbol. Their reasons vary. Some don’t believe in marriage itself. Some don’t believe in love. Some simply do not believe in my husband and myself. Their lack of respect for the symbol I wear and what it stands for does not change anything about me, my marriage, or the symbol that I hold dear.
The United States Flag is a symbol as well. I greatly respect this symbol of our country. I stand for the National Anthem (when I hear it. I honestly have not paid attention and noticed it playing before. I felt bad about this.) For those who do not stand for the National Anthem; it does not change me or my respect and love for this country. And frankly I am getting really tired of seeing this in the news. Why is this news?
Do I think everyone should stand for the National Anthem? Yes, yes I do.
Do I care if someone who I’ve never met, playing a game that I’m not watching, does not stand? No. I don’t care to hear about it. I have no plans to jump on a plane, fly to wherever, and pull the person to their feet. So why do I want to hear about this?
Tonight I am thankful for the choice to ignore headlines. Tonight I am thankful to spend time with and celebrate those who see this country for the amazing opportunity it is. This country has problems, of course. But I will still forever be grateful to live here.
