On our Debt Free journey so far, we have changed the way we plan for things. We have a home improvement project that needs to start becoming a bigger blip on our radar.
We had a few people come out last fall to give us an idea on price if we were to do part of the project. It was not the price reduction we were hoping for, with only part of the project. So, it was time to get a good quote on the whole project.
Here’s how we do it now – I stopped at a booth at the Women’s Expo and made sure they knew we were not ready to do anything yet, that we were only looking for what our goal needed to be. The lady said that was fine, and that their quote was good for a year.
When the man came out this evening we let him know the same thing. He mentioned the full price. He mentioned their financing options. I said, “No, we’ll be saving up and paying cash.”. He mentioned their 18 months save as cash. I shook my head no. After a bit he said he understood that we wanted to do cash and asked why. The hubster said, “Have you ever heard of Dave Ramsey?”
That was all that was needed! The man is from Grand Rapids. Dave Ramsey’s program is on a radio station that way. And Dave’s program, Foundations, is taught in the high school that this man’s kids attended. He is familiar with Dave. He understood. He shared some stories of how the Foundations program has helped his own four children make good decisions!
Tonight I am thankful for changing the way we make our decisions. We have a goal for our next home improvement . . and a timeline. We have a plan. And I am thankful for a salesman who understood our strange cash-only way of life! 18 months same as cash sounds good . . except, it’s not cash. What if something happened in 18 months? Maybe nothing. Maybe something. Now, we make decisions that don’t lock us in to being in debt to anyone. Now we make decisions to be free!
